  • Educational Philosophy

BGBS is a traditional school with a balance of conventional instruction and hands-on application.  We see the need for spiritual moral values to be taught as the foundation on which to build the academics.  Spiritual moral values are seen as the key to motivation for learning.  Support programs are available in library, computer, art, foreign language, music, band, drama, leadership development, and sports.

  • What curriculum does BGBS use?

Almost exclusively we use the A Beka curriculum in grades K-12.  It is a phonics based building block curriculum that focuses on content mastery.  A Beka is a challenging curriculum that is grade/skill appropriate for the student.

  • At what level is your instruction aimed?

Our classrooms operate on grade level according to the A Beka curriculum.  A Beka is frequently ahead of the identical grade level in public schools.

For example, on an average, students scored the following on the CTBS:

-Kindergarten scored on the first grade/3 month level

-Second graders scored on the fourth grade level

-Fourth graders scored on the sixth grade/fourth month level

-Sixth graders scored on the seventh grade level

-Eighth graders scored on the ninth grade level

-Tenth graders scored on the eleventh grade/nine month level

  • How prepared are High School students for college?

High School students are offered a Kentucky standard diploma, as well as a College Preparatory diploma.  BGBS’s minimum graduation requirements for both of these diplomas exceed the Kentucky (704 KAR 3:305) state requirements. One hundred percent of this year’s graduating class has met the entrance requirements for the UK system or have already been admitted to the following colleges:  Western Kentucky University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College , and Atlanta School of the Arts.  Recent graduates have been accepted to Transylvania , Campbellsville, Lexington Community College , and others.  We also offer High School course that assist students in preparation for colleges.  Some of these courses are as follows:  Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, French, Advanced Computer Processing, and Honors Junior/Senior English.

  • What about Standardized Testing?

BGBS administers the following standardized test during the school year:

                        * Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS):  Grades K-10 in April

                        * PACT:  Will be taken by all sophomores each fall

                        * PSAT:  Will be taken by all juniors each fall

*ASVAB:  Will be taken by all juniors and seniors in the fall

  • What if an elementary student needs extra help?

Blue Grass Baptist School does not have a formal tutoring program nor is remedial time built into the daily schedule.  Teachers seek to help students individually as much as possible in class and sometimes after school.  This extra help should be scheduled with the teacher.  But with full classes and a mainstreamed curriculum, substantial remedial help is not always possible.  While the teachers do their best to help, none have been trained in any learning disabilities or remediation programs.

  • What if a high school student needs extra help?

Tutorial sessions are given for high school students from 3:30-4:00 PM Monday-Thursday.  High School teachers follow a tutorial schedule and students may request time for tutoring.

  • What about classroom discipline?

BGBS is a Christ-centered community of students, faculty, staff, and parents who desire to provide a safe, peaceful, and loving environment that promotes learning and character development.  Discipline includes reminders, rewards, praise, correction, reproof, and repentance on the part of the student.  It is not meant to be enjoyable, but it should be consistent and fair.  Attempts will be made to have the correction “fit the offense.”  Our teachers are all asked to establish their own classroom rules which will aide them in providing a learning environment for all students in their class.  They are also asked to establish a system of “Rewards and Warnings.”  Discipline, when administered in love, not only brings about a desired change in one’s behavior, but also results in spiritual growth in a Christian’s life.

  • May I help or observe in the classroom?

If the teacher feels parental involvement would be beneficial, there may be opportunities to help in the classroom.  An occasional observation generally does not constitute a problem when they’re cleared with the teacher.  Frequent observations though are more of a distraction to the students and to the teacher.

  • What time does the school day begin and end?

School begins at 8:10 AM for all students.  Kindergarten students who attend half day are dismissed at 12:00 PM .  The regular dismissal time for full day Kindergarten though twelfth grade is 3:20 PM .

  • Do you offer transportation services?

We do not offer bus transportation.  Transportation is by carpool only.

  • Is BGBS accredited?

Blue Grass Baptist School is accredited by the Kentucky Department of Education through the Kentucky Non-Public School Commission.  We must recertify ourselves every five years.  During the last certification cycle, there were no deficiencies cited by the committee.

  • Are faculty members at BGBS certified to teach?

All faculty members hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and teachers hold either a state certification for teaching or certification from ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).

  • Does BGBS have Bible classes and chapel?

Bible is a very important element of the curriculum at BGBS and is a required subject taught daily in every grade.  Students attend chapel on a weekly basis.

  • Are students required to wear uniforms?
